I’m not sure of the provenance of this “interview”. I can’t say I remember it, but that’s ok — it was a long time ago. What I can say is that although it expresses more-or-less the ideas I remember having at the time, it certainly isn’t a verbatim account. I’d never, for example, use syntax like “getting someone who at that stage had considerably more experience than myself”. Someone’s done a rewrite job on this. Just saying…

I’ve enjoyed reading this, and look forward to exploring the archive in more depth. Just a note: you’ve referred to Jacqueline Hill as “Jacqueline Smith” in your introduction. Any chance you could correct this, please?

In fairness in 1995-ish he was going through (or had just been through) a nasty bitter divorce as well, whereas now he’s happy and settled in life with a new wife and children.

I have to respectfully disagree with Mr. Ainley’s comment about not being charming. He most certainly was! His Master had an evil charm that made it impossible for me to not cheer for him a little (okay, a lot). I love the interviews with Mr. Ainley that I’ve found online. He always seems to me to be very charming and funny!
